An above counter basin (also called an above bench or vessel basin) sits on top of the vanity benchtop rather than being inset into it. The full exterior of the basin is visible, making it a strong design statement. Above counter basins are available in ceramic, stone, concrete, and composite materials in a range of shapes, round, oval, rectangular, and sculpted forms.

Above counter basins typically range from 350mm to 500mm in diameter or width. For a single vanity with a benchtop of 600 – 900mm wide, a 400mm round basin is a popular choice. For a paired double vanity, two 350 – 380mm basins work well with adequate bench space between them for storage.

An inset basin (also called a top-mount or drop-in basin) drops into a pre-cut hole in the benchtop, with the rim of the basin sitting on top of the benchtop surface. This is one of the most common basin installation types in Australian bathrooms and suits a wide range of vanity styles. Inset basins are practical, secure, and easy to replace without changing the benchtop.

An inset basin has a rim that rests on the benchtop surface, while an undermount (undercounter) basin is mounted below the benchtop with the benchtop material overhanging the edge of the basin opening. Inset basins are easier to install and replace. Undermount basins offer a cleaner look with a seamless benchtop surface but require a benchtop material (like stone or solid surface) that can support an undermount application.

An undercounter basin (also called undermount basin) is installed below the benchtop surface, with the benchtop material cut to the basin opening and the basin bonded underneath. This creates a seamless, flush benchtop with no rim or lip, water and mess can be wiped directly from the benchtop surface into the basin.

Undercounter basins require a benchtop material that can be cut cleanly and finished at the edge, stone (natural or engineered), solid surface, and some composite materials are all suitable. Laminate benchtops are generally not recommended for undermount installations as the exposed cut edge can swell and delaminate with water contact. Stone benchtops are the most popular choice for undermount basin applications in Australian bathrooms.

A semi-recessed basin sits partially into the benchtop (or vanity top), with the front portion of the basin protruding beyond the front edge of the cabinet. This allows for a shallower vanity cabinet (often 350 – 400mm deep instead of the standard 450 – 550mm) while still providing a practical basin size. Semi-recessed basins are ideal for narrow bathrooms where depth is at a premium.

Semi-recessed basins are typically designed to work with shallower vanity cabinets in the 350 – 400mm depth range. The basin protrudes beyond the cabinet face by approximately 80 – 150mm. Always check the manufacturer's recommended cabinet depth for the specific semi-recessed basin you choose, as pairing it with a cabinet that is too deep or too shallow will affect the aesthetic and function.

A basin waste is the drainage fitting at the bottom of the basin that allows water to drain while also providing a plug function when needed. Basin wastes in Australia are available as click-clack (pop-up operated by pushing down), plug-and-chain (traditional rubber or metal plug on a chain), and slotted or unslotted designs (slotted versions allow the basin overflow to function). Choose a waste that matches your tapware and basin finish for a cohesive look.
